Russell Corporation has decided to shutdown its plant in Alexander City later this year, resulting in redundancy of 400 workers.
Some of the employees will be sacked as early as March 12, 2007 and remaining of them will be let go on or before October 31, 2007.
The closure of cutting and finishing Plant No.10 is believed to be the part of company's policy to increase competitiveness against textile and apparel imports from China and Far East.
Company used to employ about 7,000 workers and offshore competition has rapidly reduced count to 2,000.
Company also has plans to compensate those workers who are not absorbed by any other company.
Workers who have worked for less than one year or less will be paid two weeks of severance pay. Those who have worked for more than a year but less than five will be offered a month's severance, while all other employees will be eligible for a week for each year worked.
