New textile technologies, the challenges of marketing them, and the place of sustainable development and the environment in the textile world were some of the topics addressed by the internationally renowned speakers at Expo-Hightex 2007. The conferences were greatly appreciated by the audience—manufacturers, suppliers, buyers and experts in the fields of research, engineering and production.

Organized in collaboration with the IMI, the IRSST (Institut de recherche Robert-Sauvé en santé et en sécurité du travail) and the ETS, the conference program focused on four different themes:
•Session 1 : Textiles and personal protection equipment
•Session 2 : High-performance textiles
•Session 3 : Intelligent textiles
•Session 4 : Commercialization.

Under the guidance of Hydro-Québec and the MDEIE, a pilot networking convention—the Buytex Lounge was set up for the first time at Expo-Hightex 2007 for the purpose of increasing business opportunities for Canadian textile manufacturers. With B-to-B meetings between buyers from major European and American groups, it represented a unique vantage point for sales.

Purchasing supervisors from two French companies (Elis and EPI) and four American companies (BSN medical, AVL, Kappler, Renco Corp and Unitech) attended the Buytex show. In all, a total of 36 individual meetings of international buyers and Canadian textile professionals were scheduled. Several companies will be reaping the benefits in terms of business development.

Open to exhibitors only, the show was a hit and will be back again, bigger and better, next year. This initiative was part of a recruitment effort that ultimately attracted buyers from 120 companies, including National Defence, Pacific Safety Products Inc., the Longueuil Police, the Service de sécurité incendie de Montréal, Urgences Santé, Hydro-Québec, Johnson & Johnson, Bombardier Recreational products, VIA Rail, etc.
