NanoHorizons Inc., the developer and manufacturer of SmartSilver nanoscale antimicrobial additives for textile, health care, and industrial applications, returns as an exhibitor at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market Show (January 22-25, 2009, Salt Lake City, Booth 255-419) with another industry-recognized endorsement of SmartSilver's safety.

SmartSilver's antimicrobial silver additives were recently approved by the International Oeko-Tex Association as having been extensively tested and determined not to be harmful to human health. SmartSilver additives are also EPA-registered for use in fibers, coatings, and polymers and have been endorsed by Australian Wool Innovation.

To further its commitment to environmental safety, NanoHorizons is also partnering with the Silver Research Consortium whose mandate is to carry out research aimed at improving existing products, exploring new uses of silver, and ensuring that this venerable metal is used in accordance with sound sustainability principles.

“When we founded NanoHorizons, we pledged to apply our scientific skills to create meaningful products that made the market better in some significant way,” says Dr. James Delattre, VP Global Marketing for NanoHorizons. “We also promised to manufacture those products in a responsible manner and to continually assure ourselves that our products do no harm to the environment or to the people who interact with them. That's our formula for long term, sustainable success.”

SmartSilver is a highly durable, safe, cost-effective, and flexible antimicrobial additive made with silver nanoparticles. “Silver has been revered throughout human history for its antimicrobial and healing powers,” says Delattre. “We applied nanotechnology to optimize silver's natural properties, resulting in a unique antimicrobial that offers significant manufacturing and ecological benefits.”

Antimicrobials in general have an environmental advantage for textiles as they extend the life of fabrics by not requiring frequent high temperature laundering or harsh cleansers, thus reducing energy consumption and dependence on chemical cleaners. The nanotechnology behind SmartSilver makes its antimicrobial solution even more efficient because smaller amounts are required to achieve desired performance levels.

SmartSilver's nanoparticles bond permanently at the molecular level and do not wear off, flake off, or wash out. This means that SmartSilver's antimicrobial protection does not lead to uncontrolled release of silver into the environment. Any silver ions that these particles emit are immediately deactivated by common compounds found in the environment and the water supply.

“In addition to the natural ecological advantages of antimicrobials, industry recognition for SmartSilver from EPA, Oeko-Tex, and Australian Wool Innovation reassures us that our products meet our customers' exacting standards,” says Delattre. “We are committed toproducts that both provide unmatched performance and are environmentally safe. As test methods evolve and collective scientific knowledge expands, we will continue to ensure that our products perform as designed and meet the highest expectations we set for them.”
