The Spartanburg, US based textiles, floor coverings and chemicals company, Milliken & Co. announced that it would lay off approximately 650 jobs across its 47 worldwide manufacturing locations, but would not do the same at its plants at Greenville and Spartanburg.
The axe would fall only on 20 workers of the 700 head strong workforce at its Greenville plant, while around 12 employees would lose their jobs, of the 1,300 employed at the manufacturing facility located in its headquarters in Spartanburg.
According to a company spokesperson, the company tried everything it could to avoid coming to this point, such as temporary lay-offs and rotating people out at our various manufacturing locations on a weekly basis.
He added, "It is a gut-wrenching process to have to tell some of your good, loyal, hard-working people that, through no fault of their own, you have no work available for them', and said the layoffs were driven by customer demands in different markets.
In December, Milliken had offered voluntary retirement packages to eligible management employees in a restructuring to deal with current conditions and future economic projections. Miliken has a worldwide headcount of around 9,000 employees
