As the IDEA 2010 International Engineered Fabrics Conference and Expo approaches, The Dow Chemical Company's Adhesives and Functional Polymers business anticipates discussions about sustainability, performance and reliable global supply to be top-of-mind as attendees evaluate binder solutions for nonwoven applications. “We know the industry is seeking environmentally advanced binders that offer good performance and also enable producers to meet designations like the OEKO-TEX Standard100,” says Mark Smith, Dow Global Market Manager, adding that reliable service also is becoming increasingly important to this dynamic industry. “Our products, such as those in our acrylic-based Rhoplex™ brand, answer current and emerging needs for a multitude of applications across the entire nonwoven industry.”

Representatives from a number of Dow businesses, including Basic Plastics and Elastomers, in addition to Adhesives and Functional Polymers, will showcase the company's offerings from April 27th through 29th at IDEA 2010 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

A highlight of Dow's show presence will be the company's increasingly popular, innovative low and ultra low formaldehyde binder technology and APE-free surfactant choices. The need for low and ultra low residual formaldehyde levels in end products is becoming increasingly important in the textile and nonwoven industries. Since OEKOTEX 100 is the most broadly used industry-developed quality standard for such levels, Dow specifically developed new binders that help its customers meet the standard's requirements. “Our products help enable customers to pass tough regulations around the world without sacrificing excellent performance,” notes Pierre Blaix, Dow Global Commercial Director. “Together, we build tomorrow's nonwovens today. Our customers offer the very latest innovations to their own customers; everybody wins now and simultaneously sets the stage for future success in this very competitive industry.” Like Dow's traditional binder options, their environmentally advanced polymers offer additional features such as good durability against processes like washing and dry cleaning, low odor, excellent light resistance, suitability for skin sensitivity or open wound uses and many other features depending on the particular binder.

Dow strengthened its textile and nonwoven portfolio through its acquisition of Rohm and Haas in 2009. The combined strength of the two companies produced superb global supply capabilities and technical service. “Like many industries, nonwoven and textile producers are becoming more and more global making reliable global supply and technical service more important than ever,” Blaix remarks. Dow binder options are available worldwide with consistent formulation, steady supply and timely delivery. Dow's technical service is available at customer sites and also offers exhaustive analytical, testing, toxicology, formulation and applications services at its own facilities. “For example, we can develop binders that meet specific parameters such as certain emission standards or a desired line speed,” explains Michele Mlynar, Technical Service Manager, North America. “Our in-house capabilities allow customers to generate data, test new processes and try new products without affecting their current processes and capacity.”

Backed by more than 50 years of experience and innovation in the field, Dow is a leading global binder supplier for disposable, medical, durable, highloft and industrial nonwoven and textile applications. Customers depend on Dow binders for a vast array of nonwoven applications like disposable wipes, medical tapes and drapes, apparel interlinings and outdoor furniture cushions.
