The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) announces its support for Shaw Industries' investment in GeoHay, a company that produces high performance erosion control and storm water management products made of 100% recycled carpet.

CARE Executive Director Georgina Sikorski applauded the carpet manufacturer's investment, calling it "an important step in ensuring continued diversion of postconsumer carpet from the nation's landfills."

CARE's mission is to find market-based solutions to reduce the more than 3.5 billion pounds of carpet that are discarded in landfills every year in the United States. Representing a coalition of stakeholders that includes carpet manufacturers, entrepreneur recyclers, governments and environmental groups, CARE has facilitated the recovery, reclamation, and recycling of 1.6 billion pounds of post-consumer carpet since its founding in 2002.

According to Ms. Sikorski, GeoHay represents an ideal solution in that the company converts material that was otherwise headed for the waste stream into useful, economically-viable products. As a triple bonus, she adds, GeoHay products benefit the environments wherever they are installed.

Last year, GeoHay was installed at a construction site along the Foothills Parkway in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, along Walton County, Florida beaches during the Gulf Oil spill, and as part of a habitat-reclamation project for the endangered Cold Water Darter fish on North Georgia's Conasauga River, among other projects.

"Further growth and usage of GeoHay will help CARE achieve its mission of reducing post-consumer carpet going into the landfill, increasing recycling and finding market-based solutions for the use of post-consumer carpet," Ms. Sikorski said. "Shaw's financial investment will help make that happen."

CARE was formed as a result of the Memorandum of Understanding for Carpet Stewardship (MOU), a national agreement signed by members of the carpet industry, representatives of government agencies at the federal, state and local levels and non-governmental organizations.
