China's apparel exports decline 22.3% in Jan-April

Apparel and accessories exports from China declined 22.3 per cent to $29.308 billion during January-April 2020, compared to exports of $37.736 billion registered during the corresponding period of the previous year, according to the provisional trade data released by the country's General Administration of Customs. In April, garment exports earned only $6.739 billion.

The extended Lunar New Year in China followed by lockdown in apparel importing countries led to the huge drop in exports.

Meanwhile, exports of textiles, comprising yarn and fabric, registered an increase of 2.9 per cent year-on-year to earn $37.311 billion during the period under discussion. In April 2020, textile exports were valued at $14.620 billion, according to the data.

During January-April 2020, China imported textiles worth $5.103 billion, almost same as imports of $5.101 billion during the corresponding months of 2019. In the month of April 2020, China's textile imports stood at $1.138 billion, the data showed.
