Thai textile & clothing exports up 1.57% in Jan-July '17

Reversing the last year’s trend, exports of textile and clothing from Thailand increased by 1.57 per cent to $3.806 billion in the first seven months of 2016, compared to $3.747 billion earnings in comparable period last year, data from the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association showed. This rebound was mainly due to the rise in exports of textile segment.
 
While textile segment exports increased by 5.45 per cent year-on-year to $2.434 billion, garment exports decreased by 4.64 per cent to $1.371 billion during January-July 2017, according to the association.
 
In the textile category, woven fabric exports fetched $770.17 million during the seven-month period, followed by yarn and man-made filaments with $437.21 million and synthetic filament and staple fibres with $436.43 million.
 
Similarly, among apparel, man-made fibre garment exports were valued at $433.30 million, followed by cotton garments at $330.75 million, and garments of other textile materials at $293.37 million.
 
In terms of major destinations of Thai garment exports, the US led the pack with $459.71 million, whereas the 28-member EU accounted for $313.49 million, Japan $214.88 million, and China (including Hong Kong) $86.32 million.
 
Thai clothing exports to the other nine members of Asean increased 4.27 per cent to $74.30 million during the period under review. (RKS)
