Asia boom years - Cegid IT Conference review

Martec estimates that despite it having taken supermarket giant Carrefour about ten years to become truly successful in Asia, foreign retailers are already achieving 14.5% average annual sales growth in China.

Many larger retailers have found that by adopting and using the same systems globally often means greater consistency and reliability of information. Nonetheless, modifications and localization is always required.

Emmanuel Costa, an IT localization expert at Cegid, highlighted various regional differences at the conference: such as the importance of loyalty schemes and customer service in many parts of Asia; or more wholesale requirements in Japan and modifications being required for retail management systems - for instance, showing discount rates when working with department stores.

Although it's never easy entering new markets, the Far Eastern promise and lure of new horizons is proving a significant draw for many. Effective IT systems can help overcome the distance.
