It serves as a unifying platform, bringing together brands, products, experts, and individuals dedicated to fostering a world where all living beings co-exist harmoniously. In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, Founder Gunjan Jindal Poddar delves into the initiatives undertaken to create, promote, and sustain everything that aligns with an earth-friendly ethos.

What are the most innovative and impactful sustainable practices or technologies being adopted in the industry today?

Innovative practices include upcycling, and the use of sustainable materials like plant-based fabrics and technologies that minimise waste. Circular economy models, blockchain for supply chain transparency, and advancements in sustainable packaging are gaining prominence. These innovations contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendlier lifestyle.

What are the most significant trends you see in the sustainable lifestyle sector, and how is the sector adapting to these changes?

The sustainable lifestyle sector is undergoing transformative shifts driven by key trends. Notably, heightened consumer awareness and prioritisation of sustainability are influencing purchasing decisions, leading to a surge in demand for eco-friendly products. In response, the sector is embracing sustainability throughout the supply chain, from responsible raw material sourcing to ethical manufacturing and eco-conscious packaging.
Collaborations between brands and organisations play a crucial role in driving innovation, fostering creative solutions, and expanding the range of sustainable products. Amala Earth values collaborations that enable the curation of unique and impactful products for discerning customers, contributing to the evolving landscape of sustainable living.

Can you share the story behind the founding of Amala Earth and what inspired you to start this initiative?

Amala Earth is a manifestation of our commitment to conscious living, inspired by the essence of ‘Amala Consciousness’ in Buddhism. The genesis lies in personal experiences and reflections spanning over two decades. Transitioning from a young businesswoman to a mother intensified my contemplation of lifestyle choices.
The platform endeavours to be more than just a marketplace for selling earth-friendly and consciously manufactured products. Instead, our holistic vision is to instil and inspire people to embrace change and aim for a better world. Once that becomes part and parcel of our day-to-day living, the next step is to create a value-based community of like-minded individuals. We want to sensitise people towards a lifestyle that enables and empowers them to make an actual difference in preserving and conserving natural resources.

Can you elaborate on the concept of ‘Amala Consciousness’ and its significance in Buddhism?

Amala Consciousness, rooted in Buddhism, epitomises purity. In Buddhism, Amala represents the ultimate form of cleanliness and purity, perfectly aligning with our ethos. It guides us to live consciously and mindfully, fostering harmony with the environment. Amala Earth embodies this philosophy of mindful living by curating products that reflect the values of purity and sustainability.

How does Amala Earth’s philosophy of ‘The Butterfly Effect’ influence the way you approach business and community engagement?

The Butterfly Effect lies at the heart of our philosophy, symbolising how small actions can lead to significant positive changes. We integrate this ethos into our business approach, encouraging consumers to make mindful choices through our Butterfly Score system. This transparent scoring mechanism directs consumers towards sustainable products, while our community engagement underscores our belief in the collective power of small actions to create a positive impact on the planet.

What criteria do you use to select and score brands on the Amala Earth platform, and why are these specific criteria important?

The Butterfly Score system evaluates brands based on sustainability, ethics, and environmental impact. This holistic scoring considers the use of natural materials, ethical sourcing, eco-friendly manufacturing, recyclability, and packaging. These criteria are pivotal to ensuring that every product aligns with our commitment to fostering a sustainable and eco-conscious lifestyle. This scoring system rates brands from 1 to 8, with higher scores indicating stronger performance.

How does your platform support and promote local farmers, artisans, and craftsmen, and what impact has this had on their communities?

Amala Earth actively collaborates with local artisans, promoting fair trade practices. By showcasing their creations on our platform, we provide a sustainable livelihood for these communities. This approach not only preserves traditional craftsmanship but also contributes to community welfare. Supporting local economies and artisans is integral to our mission, creating a positive ripple effect within these communities.
Most brands that are operated by women-led ancillary units sell their products through Amala Earth. They are able to showcase their offerings to a discerning audience that values traditional, handcrafted, and artisanal products.

Can you share a success story or a transformative experience that has resulted from Amala Earth’s initiatives?

Amala Earth proudly facilitates success stories for brands dedicated to sustainable and ethical practices, exemplified by the transformative journey of Ellement Co. Collaborating with Amala Earth, whether through online channels or curated exhibitions, has been an immensely positive experience for our vegan and non-toxic nail care partner. Ellement Co. has experienced significant growth in numerical metrics and an enhancement of brand value, solidifying its position in the market catering to conscious consumers within the expansive beauty industry. This success can be attributed to the strategic support provided by Amala Earth, ensuring effective targeting of the right audience segment.

How do you envision the future of sustainable and conscious living, and what role does Amala Earth play in this vision?

We envision a future where sustainable living is the norm. Amala Earth aspires to be a catalyst in this shift by expanding its range of eco-friendly products and making earth-friendly products accessible to all. What role do certifications and eco-labels play in the sustainable lifestyle industry, and how do consumers perceive them?

Certifications and eco-labels serve as trust markers for consumers, validating a brand's commitment to sustainability. Consumers perceive them positively, viewing these labels as indicators of ethical and eco-conscious practices. These certifications not only build consumer trust but also set industry standards, fostering a collective commitment to sustainable practices.

Given the evolving nature of sustainability practices, what skills and educational pathways do you believe are crucial for professionals entering the environmental sector?

Professionals in the environmental sector find success through a combination of scientific expertise, business acumen, and effective communication skills. A deep understanding of eco-friendly technologies, adept supply chain management, and the ability to articulate the advantages of sustainable practices are essential.
