Erode merchants urge FM to exempt textiles from GST

03 Jul '17
1 min read

The Erode Handloom Cloth Merchants Association has urged finance minister Arun Jaitley to withdraw 5 per cent Goods and Services Tax (GST) on textile goods. The association has said that the 5 per cent GST on textile goods would adversely affect the trade. Representatives of the association will meet Jaitley this week and reiterate their demand.

The association had earlier sent a representation to the finance ministry in New Delhi seeking GST exemption for textile goods, however, it has not yielded anything, association president R Ravichandran told mediapersons after the body’s general council meeting.

“If the finance minister exempts us from GST, we will continue our trade, failing which we will go on an indefinite strike from July 5 in Erode district,” Ravichandran said. (RKS)
