Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business (ISB) will be working with the Telangana government to study how the pandemic has affected weavers’ families and how effective the current welfare schemes have been in easing their pain. It will also sign a three-year agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government to resolve crucial issues in administration.
Besides focusing on attracting investments, the agreement with Andhra Pradesh will lay emphasis on getting multinational companies to the state to generate employment. In the near-term, ISB will recommend Telangana to improve the effectiveness of government welfare schemes and suggest measures to build assured market, production, and improve product and design development to raise the net income of weavers.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between ISB and the Telangana department of handlooms and textiles on the occasion of National Handloom Day last week.
The Telangana government recently released ₹93 crore for weavers under the ‘Nethanna Ku Cheyutha’ (thrift) scheme well before the mandatory lock-in period of three years to provide relief in pandemic times. It has allocated ₹15 crore for the revival of the Pochampally Handloom Park and the foundation stone has been laid for the Gadwal Handloom Park, where work will begin soo, according to media reports from the state.
The Telangana department also inked an MoU with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) to conduct research on the development of sustainable textile yarn dyeing to reduce the hazardous impact of dyeing on weavers and the environment, and another with the United Nations Development Programme to work on livelihood opportunities through skill upgradation and market linkages.
