Foreign exchange valued at Tk150 million was earned in the last fiscal year by mini ready made garment (RMG) industries of Saidpur. They exported trousers, jackets, shirts and trousers to India's West Bengal and their seven-sister states.
Though their products are made of cut-pieces from imported fabrics, brought from factories in Dhaka and Chittagong, yet they compete with big RMGs with modern machineries.
There are at present 100 such mini factories. Nine owners export their products. These mini ready made garment owners have formed a syndicate.
This North Bengal region has had a marginal industrial growth, so far. Now these export-oriented RMG units have opened up possibilities of growth and employment for the people from this region.
The goods are exported through Burimari land-port in Lalmonirhat district. The Indian buyers import the garments mainly through Shiliguri, a transit for further delivery to India, Nepal and Bhutan.
These products are in high demand for their better quality, designs and cheaper prices. The buyers in the Indian states of West Bengal, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, as well as Nepal and Bhutan praise these products
The Chilahati land-port which is closed since 1965 India-Pakistan War is only 30 miles from Saidpur. A request for opening this port has been made. It is a convenient transit point as it is connected with both rail and road routes. The garment owners have applied for membership to (BGMEA) also.
