The Maharashtra government last week announced that personal protective equipment (PPE) kits and N-95 masks made by private firms cannot be sold unless certified by the state-run Haffkine Biopharmaceuticals Corporation.

The directive was issued after some manufacturers and suppliers expressed interest to sell such kits and masks during the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

The decision was taken to maintain quality as substandard equipment can increase the chances of medical staff contracting the infection, a news agency cited a government official as saying.

Anyone found to be supplying or selling substandard kits or masks will face legal action.
