A new minimum monthly wage of Tk 12,800 for workers in export processing zones (EPZs) was recently finalsed by the Bangladesh Export Processing Zone Authority (BEPZA). The proposal is now waiting for approval by the prime minister.

It includes a basic salary of Tk 6,950, half of the basic salary for house rent and Tk 2,375 as medical allowances.

The current minimum gross wage (excluding food and transport allowance) implemented in 2018 is Tk  8,200. The revision is a 56.25-per cent raise for EPZ workers.

Workers will continue to enjoy supplementary benefits like food, food allowances, transport or transport allowances, domestic media outlets reported.

The decision was taken during the fifth and final meeting of the Wage Board.

The revised wage will take effect from December 1, 2023, impacting around 500,000 EPZ workers who will receive their wages according to the new structure from January 2024.

Eight EPZs across the country host 450 operational industries.
