Amy Taylor's dissertation: 'The development of multi-sensory textiles for sensory impaired children' was acclaimed for its organisational content and obvious personal significance. Having secured a first class BSc honours degree in textile design (constructed textiles) from De Montfort University, she went on to study for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education at NTU.

The Association of Suppliers to the British Clothing Industry (ASBCI) annual student dissertation award, in its fourth year, recognises and showcases the exceptional talent of UK students on clothing industry courses including retail clothing management, textiles, testing, marketing and technology courses. The judging panel comprised university lecturers from several member colleges and industry members from the ASBCI including the 2007 award sponsor, M&S.

To be eligible for the 2008 award, students must be studying for a recognised clothing-industry related honours degree or similar qualification at an ASBCI-member university or college. A dissertation submission must be an original, well-presented 10,000 word fully referenced project showing depth and breadth of research with relevance, topicality and value to the industry.

Dissertations are nominated by final year course tutors who consider the work has exceptional merit and each participating college is permitted up to three annual submissions.

The annual student dissertation award is run by the ASBCI's student membership committee. The committee was established to give students working towards design, technical and laboratory testing, textile design, retail business and many other related qualifications a greater practical and commercial understanding of the fashion industry. In addition to student seminars and conferences students receive a special introductory pack with a full ASBCI member contact listing, two annual bulletins and discounted prices on further ASBCI technical manuals. Students also gain crucial access to relevant work placements and technical visits to key industry sites for just £35 membership per annum.
