Textile & apparel sector BOP up in Aug

After two months – June and July – of exports below last year's levels, the textile and apparel sector exported a record amount for the year in August: 215 million dollars. This amount is 8.5 percent greater than the amount exported in August of 2004 and 34 percent greater than last July. Accumulated exports for the year have already reached 1.324 million dollars, which represents a 5.9 percent increase in comparison to the first eight months of 2004.

Imports also reached record levels in the month of August, at 142 million dollars, that is, 21.3 percent more than the amount verified in August 2004, and 20.3 percent more than July of this year. During the first eight months of 2005, sector imports totaled 995 million dollars, 5.8 percent more than the 941 million dollars seen in the same period last year.

Following the same behavior as the exports and imports, the Balance of Payments reached its highest level of the year during the month of August. There was a 73 million dollar surplus. This number is 9.9 percent less than August 2004's balance and 73 percent greater than the balance seen in July of last year. The accumulated balance of payments for the year is 328.5 million dollars, 6.1 percent greater than the same period last year.
