The demands for improving the power and gas supply to the industrial sector have been reiterated time and again by the knitwear manufacturers. Also they demanded of the government, to implement the second stimulus package so as to enable the sector which is a major source of foreign exchange to the country, to withstand international competition in apparel business.

Fazlul Hoque, President of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), while citing his demands at a press conference in Dhaka, suggested that the Prime Minister should look in to the matter so as to ease the situation, by implementing measures like rationing of gas from CNG stations.

Also he recommended that the government should constitute a monitoring cell to keep a check over frequent fluctuations in yarn prices in local markets, and also that tax in respect of the diesel for consumption by the export-oriented industrial sector should be abolished.

A 0.2 percent fall was recorded in overall exports to the European markets during 2009, while knit exports in the corresponding period rose marginally by 0.19 percent, he divulged.

Also a decline of 9.95 percent in knit exports to USA was recorded for 2009, against a growth of 15 percent witnessed in 2008. Woven apparel exports too fell down last year to 3.47 percent as against a growth of 10.69 percent in 2008.

Meanwhile, he said, knit wear exports from China to the US grew from 1.13 percent in 2008 to 7.26 percent in 2009. Hoque, revealed that as the gas supply stands suspended for one-hour, it leads to a four percent reduction in production of yarn and clothing, and that recurrent power cuts leads to production loss of 10 percent.
