ASICS' target to reduce CO2 approved by SBTi

ASICS’ new target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2030, set this year, has been officially recognised by the Science Based Targets initiative(SBTi). The target’s level is considered to be based on science in order to achieve the two degree Celsius goal in the Paris Agreement. The approval came on August 1, 2018. The SBTi was established in 2015.

Carbon dioxide emissions reduction targets for 2030 are reduction of absolute scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 33 per cent by 2030 from a 2015 base-year, and reduction of scope 3 GHG emissions from purchased goods and services and end-of-life treatment of sold products 55 per cent per product manufactured by 2030 from a 2015 base-year.

The SBTi was established in 2015 and is a collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). The initiative champions science-based target setting as a powerful way of boosting companies’ competitive advantage in the transition to the low-carbon economy. Targets adopted by companies to reduce GHG emissions are considered “science-based” if they are in line with the level of decarbonisation required to keep global temperature increase below 2 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial temperatures. As of August 21, 2018, 126 companies around the world have had their GHG reduction targets independently assessed and approved by the SBTi, including 26 Japanese companies.

ASICS has aimed to include social and environmental considerations in all its business decisions in order to focus on realising a sustainable society on a global scale. In developing new products, the company, especially the ASICS Institute of Sport Science actively focuses research and development on environmentally sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. In business operations as well, ASICS is addressing the issue in various ways around the world such as introducing projects to shift to renewable energy in Europe and installing a one-megawatt solar panel at a warehouse in the US.

ASICS will continue to focus on even more sustainable business operations by developing more environmentally sustainable products and encouraging efficient energy usage and renewable energy in order to achieve the approved targets, the company says. (SV)
