Bangladesh experts want independent green growth policy
Bangladesh experts and businesses feel the country should adopt its own policy on green growth keeping issues of job creation and sustainability in mind instead of following other developed nations. As government funds to meet the financing demand of small and medium enterprises are scarce, they say the issue of financing should be addressed.

Their suggestions came up a discussion on green compliance jointly organised by the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and Adam Smith International in Dhaka recently., according to Bangladesh media reports.

Apart from ensuring inclusive growth, the government should also consider the issue of jobs as new technology would reduce job opportunities, Centre for Policy Dialogue executive director Fahmida Khatun said.

The budget for the environment ministry is less than one per cent of the total budget and therefore, the role of private sector is crucial, she said.

Stressing the high cost of green industrialisation, Viyellatex chief executive officer KM Rezaul Hasanat said none of the buyers would give an additional penny for products which were made in a green factory despite that fact that it required huge investments for the transformation. (DS)
