The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) recently bagged the 2021 USGBC Leadership Award by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for green initiatives in the apparel industry. BGMEA president Faruque Hassan said 43 garment factories have received ‘Lead Platinum’ certification for fulfilling environment codes and compliances.

Thirty nine of the top 100 LEED certified factories in the world in the industrial category are located in Bangladesh. Another 500 factories are awaiting certification.
He said RMG manufacturers took the challenge of restructuring the industry after some unexpected accidents in the sector.
“Over the past decade, Bangladesh's garment industry has established itself as a role model in the world as a safe industry with the tireless work of our entrepreneurs, spending thousands of crores in the security sector and the support of government-buyer-development partners,” he was quoted as saying by Bangladesh media reports.
“We have been able to bring about a radical change in the industry by prioritizing the environment and safety of workers. Our initiative and achievements have been praised worldwide,” he said.
According to Hong Kong-based international audit firm QIMA, Bangladesh ranks second in the world in terms of ethical sourcing. This report has been prepared by evaluating various aspects of the quality, compliance, working hours and labor quality of the global supply chain, said the BGMEA president.
Work is also under way to reduce the gender inequality in the RMG sector, he added.
Bangladesh has been able to double its exports in the last 10 years where the export was worth $14.6 billion in 2011,it touched the milestone of worth $33.1 billion in 2019.
