Garments and textile exporters in the Philippines have joined hands to manufacture 10,000 protective personal equipment (PPE) sets per day after the Holy Week, according to cabinet secretary Karlo Nograles, who recently said the mass production of medical-grade PPE has been initiated by the Confederation of Wearable Exporters of the Philippines (CONWEP).

“Raw materials for these will be shipped in by this week and the roll out of production at the garment factories will immediately start after the Holy Week,” he announced in a press conference.

Before the pandemic, the country did not produce medical-grade PPE, Nograles was quoted as saying by a media outlet in the country.

After several tests by the department of health and the Philippine General Hospital, CONWEP refitted the design prototypes until these were approved, he said.

To further augment the country’s supply, the government has exempted the import of PPE and other medical emergency supplies from tax and duties.

Imported health products for donation that are certified by regulatory agencies or accredited third party organizations in the originating countries shall be automatically cleared, he added.
