Maintain level-playing field with e-commerce policy: CII

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has said that the national policy on e-commerce should be framed with greater digital economy and larger national interest in mind. The association welcomed the government’s move to come up with a policy to deal with competition, regulation, data privacy, taxation and technical issues like localisation of servers.

CII said that issues like data protection and localisation influence the entire digital economy and policies made to deal with them should be in the larger national interest and not just limited to e-commerce.

A national e-commerce policy can provide the right impetus to this emerging sector that has a lot of growth potential, said media reports quoting Chandrajit Banerjee, director general, CII. However, the chamber is of the opinion that the safeguard mechanism, which prohibits marketplaces from controlling inventory, working through related entities and influencing prices, is important for promoting local businesses and ensuring a level-playing field.

Banerjee agrees with the government’s take that national policy will help facilitate trade as well as meet India’s national economic goals.

The think tank on the framework for national policy on e-commerce was established recently by the department of commerce. It will provide a credible forum for an inclusive and fact-based dialogue leading to recommendations for informed policy making, so that the country is adequately prepared to take advantage of the opportunities, and meet the challenges, that would arise from the next wave of advancements in digital economy.
