Taiwanese brands keen on expanding to Chinese market must understand regional differences, according to Eric Lin, Chairman of a major kids apparel retailer Les Enphants Co.
While speaking at the 2011 Brand Forum, Mr. Lin recalled the days when his apparel company first entered the Chinese market and said that he felt as if he was simultaneously expanding to several markets.
He said that there are vast regional differences within China as it is a large country. For example, he said, salary levels are not uniform across China and employees in Tier I city like Shangai would have to be paid six times more salary than their counterparts in Tier II cities in Sichuan province.
He added that adhering to strict quality standards is another thing that the management of companies wishing to expand to Chinese market must understand.
The 2011 Brand Forum was held to exchange views on branding across the Taiwan Strait.
