The sale of apparels during September 2011 declined in Japan due to reaction to previous year's late summer heat and typhoons.

The Japan Chain Stores Association, which represents 8,021 stores owned by 60 firms across Japan, said apparel sales dipped by 3.8 percent year-on-year to 90,398 million yen during the month. While the clearance sale of summer wear items was favourable, the sale of fall items was yet to pick up.

In menswear, the sale dropped by 4.4 percent y-o-y to 14,980 million yen. The sale of shirts was good, but there were fewer buyers for suits, jackets and slacks.

The sale of womenswear decreased by 2 percent y-o-y to 28,311 million yen, though there was brisk sales in jeans, pants and cut and sewn items.

The sales of all other apparel and accessories too fell by 4.7 percent to 28,311 million yen.

The drop in apparel sales was in tune with the general decline in sales observed at the chain stores during the month. Total sales at the chain stores fell by 3.6 percent y-o-y to 987,096 million yen in September, marking the second consecutive monthly decline.
