The legacy of denim harkens back to 17th century France and Serge de Nimes – a sturdy fabric known as "serge" that was first introduced in Nimes, France. More than a century later, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis turned homegrown American denim into the first blue jean.

What followed was a new uniform of progress adopted by free-thinking people around the world. Since then, French and American culture have continued to be deeply intertwined, giving birth to many important movements in fashion, art, music, film and art.

To celebrate this long standing connection and the progress it has inspired, the grand opening of the new Levi's store on the Champs-Elysees will feature a series of collaborations between French and American cultural pioneers. Doors officially open on Friday, May 11, 2012

Over the course of two months, music legends Pedro Winter (a.k.a Busy P) from Ed Banger Records (Paris) and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem/DFA Records (New York) as well as street artists Mr. Andre (Paris) and Shepard Fairey (Los Angeles) will share their love for each other's cultures, creative spirits and homelands through inspired music and art-themed installations, limited-edition collaboratively designed apparel and a series of events, screenings and interactive workshops.

Inspired by its location on one of the world's most prestigious and covetable shopping streets, the Levi's Champs-Elysees flagship store will house an impressive array of the latest fashion trends, the very best in denim as well as a selection of vintage clothing.

Celebrating Levi's passion for craftsmanship and authenticity, a tailor shop is located on the first floor allowing customers to have their favorite denim items tailored by a team of specialized craftsmen. The tailor shop is one of only four in the world including shops in London, New York and San Francisco.

The Levi's Champs-Elysees store is the second largest Levi's store in Europe (second only to the flagship store on Regent Street in London). The more than 650-square-meter store is composed of three floors and has a vintage, industrial and authentic look and feel that pays homage to the Levi's brand's commitment to sustainability.

Woven deep into the fabric of the company, sustainable design has been integrated into every aspect of the store – from the electrics and lighting to the ventilation. Wherever possible, FSC-certified woods have been used, and the store is filled with reclaimed, reused, restored and existing materials.
