Thienchai Mahasiri, Chairman, Thai Garment Association, called for the government to discuss access to a larger market for textile products in a series of free-trade talks.
He explained that wider access to other countries will raise the textile exports by 20 percent in 2006.
He said that the aim of free-trade agreement is to end import tariffs, which are at present about 10-25 percent.
Thienchai stated that he has refused to sign the agreement unless their demands are fulfilled.
He said that the US still protected their industries in some states.
In order to give Thai products an edge over Chinese goods, the US should end the tariffs.
Even with no tariffs, Thai products are still 2 percent costly than products from China, on average, he added.
