Hbc declares six new Designer Depot locations to open

canada's largest department store hudson's bay company (hbc) announced the first wave of expansion for its designer depot format. the off-price retail store, first introduced in the greater toronto area last november, will open locations in st. catharine's, whitby, windsor, scarborough, calgary, and edmonton this fall.

“canada's growing off-price retail market, with few large players, represents a significant opportunity for hbc,” said marc chouinard, president, hbc mg.“through the execution of our opportunity buy strategy, we have created a comprehensive presence in this sector offering consumers off-price merchandise in a variety of shopping formats. hbc is prepared to meet the insatiable canadian demand for affordable style with the opening of designer depot locations across canada.”

designer depot represents the third phase of hbc's opportunity buy strategy, which targets canada's $8 billion off-price market. the strategy has three core objectives: to introduce exceptional-value, branded merchandise known as 'power buy' in its bay, zellers and home outfitters formats; the introduction of style outlet departments within select bay stores and the development of free-standing locations which are branded as designer depot.

designer depot offers top-of-the-line designer labels at 'depot prices' in ladies, mens, kids, accessories and home categories. the format has a higher percentage of designer and better branded merchandise than its competitors in this sector.
