Kyrgyzstan govt allocates land for garment park

The Government of Kyrgyzstan has allocated fifty hectares of land for setting up a garment technopolis or Technology Park, as part of its 2013-15 program to increase clothing exports by 50-60 percent by 2015.

The new garment park to come up in Voenno-Antonovka village near the country’s capital city of Bishkek will have 35-40 garment units, and will create at least 10,000 new jobs, according to the Ministry of Economic Development & Trade.

The Government’s program to develop the country’s garment and textile industry includes reducing dependence on imported fabrics.

The Legprom (Light Industry) Association in Kyrgyzstan consists of over 600 companies, which together employ over 150,000 people.

Since 2006, the Kyrgyz garment sector has developed at a fast pace and the sector’s total production was estimated to be around US$ 200 million last year.

Around 80-90 percent of clothing produced in Kyrgyzstan is exported, mostly to Russia and Kazakhstan. Last year, Kyrgyzstan overtook Turkey and Italy to become the third-largest apparel supplier to Russia, next only to China and Belarus.

This year, Kyrgyzstan joined the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia, which makes Kyrgyz exports to these countries duty-free.
