Mona Kamal try to preserve memory of her childhood and ancestry in order to gain a personal understanding of her traditions in a Canadian modern reality. These memories deal with the migration of her family through the generations, and the fusion of cultures that result.
The main component of the exhibition is a nine foot wide, thirty foot long vellum screen that has the intricate repeat pattern of an Islamic marble screen painted on it.
The pattern has been derived from Pakistani postage stamps that the artist found on the streets of Toronto. Projected onto the vellum are images of the artist's family, both alive and dead, and mementos such as passports and diaries that invite the viewer to make their own reconstruction of the history and migration of the artist's family.
