Textile and apparel industry of Saskatchewan will be provided with financial assistance of around $200,000 from the province to train employees in modular manufacturing.

The Apparel & Textile Association (ATAS) will manage funds and help companies make the shift from existing methods to the new production standards as well as accept and review project requests in connection with the new system.

The fund will enhance the exports activities of Saskatchewan's apparel and textile industry, which is growing by more than 80 percent over the last four years, Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Eldon Lautermilch said.

This will also allow the industry to grow and compete with other Canadian manufacturers. The industry includes 400 companies that currently employ 1,800 people, and annual sales go beyond $45 million.

With this new method, companies can use 'just-in-time' system and carry minimal stock.

A single team can produce garments from beginning to end using new modular system. This will avoid line production that takes more time and people.
