B Prasad and Sons Limited, a Suva-based company, is planning to set up a garment manufacturing unit at a cost of Fiji dollar 2 million in the rural region of Navua district, located within Serua Province in the Central Division of Fiji, Fiji Times reported.

After performing a ground breaking ceremony for a multi-million dollar complex in Navua town, the company’s managing director Ashok Kumar said he had written a letter to the Prime Minister three months ago concerning the garment project and they have received a response.

Mr. Kumar said about 80 percent of people in Navua travel everyday to Suva, the capital of Fiji, and a good part of their income was spent on travelling expenses.

He said majority of people from Navua work at the garment factory in Suva and setting up a unit locally would benefit them as they can get employment and thus save on their expenses.

The construction of new apparel factory would open job opportunities for about 30 to 40 people initially, and later on the clothing unit would employ hundreds of people thereafter, Mr. Kumar said.

The apparel unit would be similar to the existing one operational in Suva, the capital of Fiji, he added.

Mr. Kumar said they were planning to develop Navua further as there is ample availability of land.

He informed that the company has applied for a tax-free status to help establish a garment factory in Navua.
