Mothers Work preliminary same store sales up 5% for Aug 2006

Mothers Work Inc, the world's leading maternity apparel retailer, announced preliminary net sales for the month of August 2006 (ending August 31, 2006) and reaffirmed its previous guidance for sales and earnings for the fourth quarter.

Comparable store sales for August 2006 increased approximately 5 percent (based on 1,462 locations) versus a comparable store sales decrease of 0.5 percent (based on 1,014 locations) for August 2005.

Preliminary net sales for the month of August 2006 increased approximately 1 percent to approximately $46.5 million from $46.1 million reported for the month of August 2005.

The increase in net sales for August 2006 was primarily driven by increased comparable store sales offset by a decrease in sales for the month from the Company's Oh Baby! by Motherhood licensed arrangement with Kohl's.

The decrease in sales from this licensed arrangement reflects a shift in the timing of product shipments to Kohl's for this July and August compared to last year.

The Company's sales from the Kohl's licensed arrangement for the combined months of July and August 2006 increased versus the combined months of July and August 2005.

During August 2006, the Company opened one store and closed three stores. As of the end of August 2006, the Company operates 811 stores, 712 leased department locations and 1,523 total retail locations, compared to 855 stores, 743 leased department locations and 1,598 total retaillocations operated at the end of August 2005.

Mothers Work is the world's largest designer and retailer of maternity apparel, using its custom TrendTrack merchandise analysis and planning system as well as its quick response replenishment process to "give the customer what she wants, when she wants it."

As of August 31, 2006, Mothers Work operates 1,523 maternity locations, including 811 stores, predominantly under the tradenames Motherhood Maternity.
