Uncertainty over the Andean Free Trade Agreement has seen the US retailers losing their love for Peru. Refusal of Bush Government to push through the bill ahead of mid-term elections in November has caused reduction in the flow of order from US for Peruvian apparel.
Export of textile and apparel to US from Peru was static at US $401.1 million, an increase of 0.9 percent during the first half of the year.
Another setback has been the constant decline in apparel production for the last ten months with total output for first six months of 2006 decreasing by 3.4 percent compared to previous year.
During the same period, knit apparel sector weakened as well with the total textile production declining by 3.8 percent.
