Bureau of Labor Statistics released the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of New York (NY)-Northern New Jersey for August 2006. The CPI rose 0.4 percent rise in the month of August.
Michael L. Dolfman, Regional Commissioner of the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics, said that the August rise largely reflected increases for housing and higher prices for apparel, frequently up at this time of year with the introduction of fall and winter lines.
The apparel index rose 4.1 percent, largely reflecting increases for women's outerwear, women's footwear, and jewelry and watches. The August increase followed four consecutive months of decreases, which ranged from -0.6 percent in April to a record -5.3 percent in July. Over the year, apparel prices declined 6.8 percent.
