The 62nd All India Textile Conference was recently organized in Punjab with the theme 'Fostering textile growth in the global scenario'. Conference highlighted Punjab as the upcoming apparel capital of India.
Country's textile sector is among those rare ones worldwide which conduct all phases from raw material to finished product. Industrialists are preparing to upgrade local apparel-garment sector now.
Textile and garment exports of Punjab are worth US $300 million. Local market is worth $1 billion and it is expanding by above 10 percent annually.
In order to conquer global markets, especially the branded segment, Punjab is modernizing. Ministry of Textiles plans to construct apparel parks nationwide to assist garment importers.
Active participation by knitwear units of Ludhiana and Mohali has increased operations of Punjab Apparel Park.
International giants like GAP, Sara, Marks and Spencer, Tommy Hilfiger and Mexx import from Ludhiana knitwear cluster, which exports fine knit fabrics to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Cluster supplies apparel to big local brands including Raymond's, Wills Lifestyle, Pantaloon and Colourplus.
