A series of clothing workshops, beginning with 'Historia's Secret', will be conducted by Somerset Historical Center. According to curator Carrie Blough, who will teach at the workshops, these will focus on activities of women in ancient periods.
Series will include making Civil War era pantaloons and 18th century pockets. She also hopes to arrange a weaving workshop for a textile exhibition to be held shortly.
First workshop of the series, concentrating on sewing of 18th century pockets, has been booked completely. These accessories were tied by ladies around the waist beneath their outfits. Blough will teach the participants.
Second workshop, led by assistant curator Gail Smith, focuses on the sewing of lady drawers of Civil War era type. A couple of mid-19th century pantaloons from the center's collection will be remade by every participant.
Blough's workshop is to include hand-stitching, whereas Smith's will comprise the use of machines because women in the 1850s were utilizing sewing machines.
