Chief Minister (CM) of the Tamilnadu, J Jayalalithaa has sought Prime Minister (PM), Manmohan Singh's intervention for an exclusive package for hosiery manufacturers at Tirupur.

In a letter to the Prime Minister, she said the package would help to sort out major problems faced by hosiery makers whose units have been sealed by the court on non-deposition of the seed money for establishing pollution control equipment.

Seeking support of the Union Textiles Ministry, the CM stated that as per the regulation of the Textile Centre Infrastructure Development Scheme, (TCIDS) the cost for setting up of pollution control equipment is not within the reach of the hosiery units of Tirupur.

Hence, regulations be changed for Tirupur, as a special & exceptional case and balance funds must be released for installing pollution control units by the Union Textiles Ministry.

The amount must be extended under absolute subsidy, as these manufacturers have already paid 25 percent of the cost towards setting up costly pollution control equipment, she added.

Stating that Tirupur was generating substantial foreign exchange being a leading export centre from South India, Jayalalithaa said the producers required to be encouraged through Government support in helping them contribute towards making Indian textile industries excel on the global platform.
