According to Nielsen's yearly retail report, number of hyper, super and chain markets reached 7221 in 2007 from 2135 in 1998. This change also affects the consumer shopping habits deeply, reveals report.

The supermarkets, which increased 3.5 times in 10 years, have begun to cripple the traditional retail business and with this significance of grocery stores reduced in trade.

Taking Nielsen's data into account, number of grocery stores and medium markets decreased in 9 years from approximately 167000 to 130000. Around 22 percent grocery stores closed during the period under consideration, and wherever a supermarket opens, the nearby grocer has to shut down his store.

The study also compares Turkish retail business with EU's. European countries have seen remarkable growth in retail from 59 percent in 1985 to 86 percent in 2004.

While Europe has 15 hypermarkets and 150 supermarkets against the population of one million, Turkey lags behind with only 4 hypermarkets and 12 supermarkets against the same population.
