The project established in Hasalaka is a good example of this as it provides 600 new jobs in the Mahiyangana and Hasalaka areas. Another positive factor is that it will boost Sri Lanka's garment industry, which is one of the major employers as well as export sector in the country. Sri Lanka's garment industry is a dynamic sector but needs to be strong enough to face the challenges emanating from overseas competition.

The Sumithra Group is a pioneer investor whose first plant was set up in 1984. Today the Sumithra Group is a significant player in the garments industry, operating four factories in various parts of the country and providing employment to 2,700 workers.

Sumithra Group's latest plant at Hasalaka is a state-of –the –art factory specializing in the manufacture of woven apparel. The products from the company are of a very high quality and they have captured markets in the USA and the European Union. The factory specializes in the manufacture of trousers. Many leading brands such as Next (UK), Columbia (International), Macy's (US), Tema(Turkey) regularly place orders with Sumithra group.

Company officials are very happy with their choice to invest in the Hasalaka region. They attribute their decision to two important factors. The close proximity of the Maliban Washing Plant also known as the Melbourne Textile Plant made it attractive to set up the plant. The second reason was that there is no shortage of labour in the Mahiyangana area.
