Apparel exports show steady growth

Apparel exports from Sri Lanka increased by 4.1 percent year on year to US $231.3 million compared with $222.2 million in April 2006.

In April exports to the US dropped by 10.3 percent to $109.2 million year on year compared to $121.8 million in the same month in 2006.

According to US data, in the first four months of 2007, imports of both apparel and non-apparel from Sri Lanka amounted to $575.2 million compared with $579.3 million during same period in 2006.

Of the twenty-one merged garment categories, six recorded a growth compared to the previous period. They were 336/636(44.23 percent), 338/339(2.22 percent), 347/348(9.47 percent), 349/649(1.07 percent), 352/652 (33.35 percent) and 359s/659s (29.41 percent).

Growth in value recorded by competitors for the US market were China at 57.0 percent, Cambodia for 21.8 percent, Bangladesh with 17.2 percent, Indonesia at 21.3 percent, Pakistan for 13.2 percent and Vietnam with 20.8 percent.

Sri Lankan apparel exports to the EU in April increased of 22.6 percent to $11.7 million from $91.1million in April 2006.
