Humayun Akhtar Khan, Commerce Minister, on Wednesday released the trade policy for fiscal year 2007-08, with reforms agenda to increase merchandise exports which have grown by almost 112 percent, from US$7.8 billion in 1998-1999 to $16.5 billion in 2005-06.

Although Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has expressed its satisfaction over this policy, it is concerned about difficulties that manufacturers and exporters would face if the export policy implementation is delayed.

When Fibre2fashion asked Abdur Rehman, PRGMEA Chairman, south zone, whether delay in trade policy implementation would adversely effect the textile industry, he said, “It is too early to comment on this."

Exporters are already troubled with challenges posed by Chinese enterprises in the textile sector. Abdur Rehman shared his views regarding steps that the Government has taken to cope with this difficult situation. He said, "Government is trying to facilitate Pakistan's exports into China by setting office and outlets in that country."
