Jiaxing fur clothes export takes a beating

Due to warm winters experienced last year, the fur clothing industry of Jiaxing in Zhejiang Province saw a decrease in fur clothing export in the first half of this year. This is in sharp contrast to the fact that the said industry has seen a quick rise in recent years.

In the first half of this year, Jiaxing exported 708 shipping of fur clothes, down 29 percent than the same period last year. Along with this, export of raw materials also went down, such as raccoon fur, whose unit price decreased by over 30 percent.

It is in the month of May that fur enterprises chalk out plan for production of garments after receiving orders. However, this year, some manufacturers did not receive even one order. For those few who did, it was not enough to begin the cycle of mass production of fur goods. As a result, many fur-clothes manufacturers had to stop producing fur goods.

Explaining the reason behind this phenomenon, insiders said that because of last year's warm winters, many foreign clients are still unwilling to place their orders with local fur manufacturing houses.

Continuous RMB appreciation, decreasing Chinese export rebate rate, increase in labor-force cost and other disadvantages have further aggravated the situation.

According to Government sources, though fur clothes' export quantity of Jiaxing accounted for 40 percent of China's total fur-clothes export, most of them are low-grade fur products.
