Garment industry is considered as one of the pillars of Cambodian economy and it is strong enough to withstand the rising competition in the global arena as the expiry of quotas on China is nearing by.
Cambodia's main export partners are the US, Singapore, Japan, Thailand, China, Indonesia and Malaysia.
According to a report released recently, in the first half of this year country achieved 12 percent rise in the exports of textile and apparel products which in turn has helped Cambodia to become the sixth largest apparel exporting country in the world.
Cambodian garment industry has grown very fast as neighbouring manufacturing countries like from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore had set up their production facilities for their exports to take advantage of the country quota-free access to the US and EU markets and relatively cheaper labourers.
The industry imports raw materials mainly from other Asian countries and has been able to attract foreign direct investment, which in turn has enjoyed strong export and employment growth. The apparel sector has created job opportunities for around 500,000 locals.
