Readymade garments (RMG) sector has emerged as the one of the pillars of Bangladesh's economy and earns most foreign exchange for the country.

Previously, the garment industry had to rely on other countries for fulfilling its demands of accessories. However, over the years, with the growth of this sector, industry for accessories has made a mark in the country and notably, its expansion has reached to a point where local manufacturers can meet the 80 percent requirement of the accessories used in exportable garment and knit items.

Presently, over 100 accessory manufacturing industries are operating in the country. Producers supply zippers, button, pocketing fabrics, hangtag sewing thread to the garment and knit manufacturers from their industrial units.

Statistics reveal that the accessories contribute around US$1.0 billion in exports of garment and knit items every year.

The country now imports high quality items like ornamental stones, belt and clips from Hong Kong and exports few accessories are to China, India and Vietnam.
