Clothing
Sales were the worst for at least eight years and down on a year ago for the sixth consecutive month, despite continued heavy discounting and promotions. As in past months, childrenswear was stronger than womenswear and menswear as tight budgets were spent on essentials rather than discretionary items. Value ranges and accessories held up better than spring/summer clothing which was hit by the wintry weather. Even upmarket designer clothes, which had outperformed for some time, showed slower growth.
Footwear
Sales fell further below their year-earlier level to show their largest decline for two years. Many found even heavy discounts and promotions failed to attract customers and even children's footwear, which had held up so far, was down on a year ago. In the very wet and cold weather, spring/summer shoes and sandals had a slow start while hi-leg and ankle boots did sell, though often at markdown prices. The squeeze on discretionary spending meant value lines and smart workwear were preferred to fashion casuals. However, premium designer shoes continued to outperform.
