Retail Alberta will honor two of the province's top retailers with awards of distinction, showcasing their entrepreneurial spirit, business acumen and passion for the industry. The Retail Legend and Retail Legend in the Making Awards are part of Retail Week, an annual week-long celebration designed to acknowledge the more than 211,000 Albertans employed in the industry, and the retail sector's contributions to the provincial economy.
Retail Legend Award The 2005 Retail Legend award is presented to Darrell Derk of Derks Fine Group of Companies of Edmonton. This award is given to a retailer who has been in business for 30 or more years, has shown company growth through number of locations, staff and/or innovations, and is actively involved in the community. Retail Alberta's Board of Directors selects the honoree.
The Retail Legend Award will be presented at 1 p.m. at Fantasyland Hotel, West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, with the assistance of the Minister of Economic Development, Clint Dunford.
"The Derk family exemplifies the true entrepreneurial spirit of Alberta's retail industry," says Wojcicki. "They are a role model for today's young retail business people."
Master tailor, Stephen Derk, founded Derks Fine Group of Companies in 1939 and became well known for dressing Edmonton's elite in made-to-measure suiting and formalwear attire. Darrell Derk, Stephen's son, has been involved in the family-run business since the age of 13, and purchased the company from his father in 1989.
