Since the latter months of 2007, clothing trade in China has been steadily deteriorating, with condition becoming extremely worse in the first half of 2008.

Apparel and garment industry in Fumen town, Guangdong Province, has been hit hard, as nearly 3000 plants were forced to close down due to poor trade.

Clothes wholesales market of the town, which was among the extremely popular sales hubs in China, has also diminished.

Experts point out that the reason for this is that the market mostly housed stores belonging SMEs, which have been weakening rapidly.

Considering all the above factors, many export oriented enterprises are now entering domestic markets, raising the competition to a new level.

Thus, the clothes supply in local markets is much higher than the actual demand.

Government is also trying hard to help enterprises in Fumen. It has taken few impressive measures, including reducing the rent for shops by 30 percent and allowing Korean fabric traders to enter Fumen, which will help companies to upgrade the product quality.
