The textile industry in India and across the globe is going through one of the most difficult times it has ever faced. But even in those trying times there are some entrepreneurs who are optimistic of the future of this sector and are willing to flow against the tide.

Orient Craft, one of the biggest garment manufacturing companies in India, has proposed to set up a special economic zone (SEZ) with a focus on the textile industry at an investment of Rs12,000 million. It is the first of its kind in Northern India.

Fibre2fashion spoke to a senior company official, and according to him, the textile SEZ is planned to be constructed in the state of Haryana and will be spread over 334 acres.

The first phase of the SEZ is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2010 and when fully completed, is anticipated to provide employment to around 50,000 people. The SEZ will have all the necessary infrastructure facilities needed like schools, hotels, residential apartments etc.
