Zegna, the well-known Italian manufacturer of fine-wool fabrics, has just announced the launch of a new fine-wool competition, the Zegna Wool Trophy – South Africa.
The competition will be judged locally and the aim is to encourage producers to improve the quality of their wool. The winner will be announced at a function to be held in Port Elizabeth in March 2009.
Only sound fleeces of finer than 17.9 microns will be accepted.
The Wool Testing Bureau will measure fibre diameter using the OFDA system as stipulated by Zegna. The fleeces will be judged according to a scale of points for fibre diameter, weight, quality, strength, and evenness. Fibre diameter is the most important characteristic, representing 50 points.
Staple strength is equally important and fleeces should be well grown and sound without a sign of tenderness, which means that hunger-fine wool will automatically be disqualified. The wool should also be of a good length.
The closing date for entries is 31 January 2009 and entry forms are available from Cape Wools and wool brokers.
